Climate
Within the sub-freezing zone, the Nakchu region has a freezing, dry and stormy climate with little oxygen. Its annual average temperature is -0.9 C to -3.3 C, with annual relative humidity 48%-51%, rainfall volume 320-460mm (12.6-18.1inches) and duration of sunshine 2852.6-5881.7hrs. Winter usually runs from October to April, with the average temperature ranging between -7 C to -9 C. It is dry, stormy and hailstorms are fairly frequent. Summer, from May to September, creates a warm, humid plateau and is a pleasant traveling season for visitors. The peak seasons (May-September) see 80% of the annual rainfall, with the average temperature somewhere between 1 C-12 C. You will struggle to find purer air and a more breathtaking blue sky than up in the plateau at 4,500 meters (14,763 feet) above sea-level. Though a summer northern Tibet tour sounds appealing, remember to take sunglasses or hats to avoid too much exposure to UV rays. Winter clothes should be carried even in the summer, since there is a large temperature difference between the daytime and the nighttime.

Before making the trip up to northern Tibet, we strongly advise you to stay in Lhasa for at least a week to get used to the abrupt changes in altitude. At 1,100 meters (3,609 ft) higher than Lhasa, Nakchu may cause further uneasiness for those who are making their first visit to the highland. Headache tablets are of great help. Taking highland Hongjingtian (a kind of herbal medicine to ease extreme exhaustion) or ginsheng tablets beforehand may also be helpful. Water and fruits are always necessities to reduce the effects of mountain sickness .
